Dreaming in Stereo #32 - In Dreams

This episode's Second Hour Spotlight theme: dreams. That may be a but obvious, but it does offer  good excuse to play some favorites, especially the early New Order. As much as I love what they've done, Movement always begged the question of what would have happened had they not gone in the club direction.

Dreaming in Stereo #31 - Wintersongs

Here in the Mid-Atlantic U.S., we've had more hint of winter than the actual thing this season (or at least it feels that way to someone who grew up in the Midwest). We've had one, maybe two snows so far, and not until after January 1. So when we got a cold snap a couple of weeks ago, it reminded me of what this time of year is supposed to feel like, and inspired this episode's Second Hour Spotlight.

Funnily enough, finding songs about winter/ice/cold/frost got a little harder once I got out of the classic dream pop stuff. There are actually more shoegaze songs about summer (granted, at least a few called "Summer's End" or variations thereof), and so it did take a little work. But honestly, it's not like I'd pass up a chance to spend time digging into back catalogs.

Front catalogs played a major role this week as well. The new Piroshka single that leads off the show was an especially bright find - I'm growing to appreciate how little they sound like Lush, and considering the pedigree of everyone in the group, it only makes sense. I've been wrong before, but I definitely feel like that album's going to be one of the highlights of the year. The new Tamaryn single - which I just stumbled upon - was also quite the revelation. I saw them open for Lush back in 2016, and enjoyed them well enough, but the new single really takes the act to the next level. Another album to look forward to.And then we had new stuff from Swervedriver - who are apparently back for real - and Spiritualized, which yes, has been out for months, but I just finally got the chance to share. And the Twilight Sad have a new one out, which is always a good thing - although interestingly they seem far less crushing in their sound than before. Still, a group always worth checking out.

And, while I shouldn't draw attention to this - well, some shows go smooth and steady, and some remind you of the risks inherent in live broadcasting. This was definitely the latter, and I blame all errors on technical issues and outside factors, and none on DJ error.

Anyhow, your show:

Dreaming in Stereo #30 - China/Taiwan/Philippines Shoegaze

Sometimes there are easy themes that readily and obviously present themselves, and sometimes you have to go working for it. So, while this episode's Second Hour Spotlight theme may not seem obvious it's very definitely something I threw together at the last minute part of a larger project I plan on tackling throughout the year.

One of the cool (to me) aspects of music is seeing a particular style or genre migrate from the geographical/social/political/whatever group that created it to people and places far and wide. There's something about seeing German hip-hop heads or Japanese jazz obsessives that is just cool to me; it's a testament to the power of the music.

On that note, throughout the year I'll be focusing on shoegaze/dreampop bands from across the globe; I've heard enough groups from enough different countries that I can put the UK and US off til the end and still have plenty to choose from.

I'm not exactly sure why I started with China, but it seemed as good a place as any. I've also covered Taiwan, and was trying to find another China-related country to pull from, but there don't appear to be any Tibet-based bands, and I was able to find mention of one Mongolia-based group. So, the Philippines seemed a good place to go from there. It was great to see so many active bands in the respective countries, and to see how they take the form and make it their own. There are at least a couple of bands I'll be revisiting in shows to come.

And, credit where it's due: big thanks to NoiseArtists.net for doing a lot of the leg work with their articles on the scenes in China and Taiwan. In fact, they've done some good research on a number of countries, so give them a look if you want a deeper dive into global gaze.

There's also a mini-theme set in the first half, which should be pretty obvious when you see/hear it. It was just one of those things that came together, and I'm a sucker for a good through-line.

So without further ado:

Dreaming in Stereo #29 - The Year(s) in Review

I know a lot of people were talking about how glad they were that 2018 was finally over, and sure, it may not have been the greatest year in recorded history, but for music there was little to complain about. The year saw a lot of great releases by new and old acts, and a lot of good shows happened (too many to catch, as it turned out).

Partly inspired by a tweet by a former Pitchfork editor, and partly due to my taking the bulk of the year off from music, I decided not to try a "best of" show for the year, since there was no way I could do justice to all of the good stuff that came out. Instead, for the first hour we have a bunch of stuff I really dug that was released in the past year. For hour two, I figured it would be fun to jump back a decade for each set, so you get songs from 2008, 1998, and 1988.

It was fun and interesting putting those sets together; I hadn't really looked back at the music I lived with like that, and it was a trip to see how the sounds changed in those jumps (as well as take the journey down memory lane - somewhere there's a picture of me and some guys hanging out with Curve after a show in the 1990s).

Dreaming in Stereo #28 - Piroshka

The first show for Stranger Radio, and the first two hour show in a while (well, besides the practice show). Having that extra hour, I've decided I should do something with the time besides just throw random songs, so the second hour is the feature/focus segment (I really should give that a fancy name).

Since I had been planning a Lush-themed show back when I was doing the one-hour Mixcloud-only shows, and since the first single by Piroshka had recently come out (the new band featuring Miki from Lush along with a stellar line-up of talent), I figured there was my excuse.

Enjoy.

Dreaming in Stereo episode 26

It's funny how long Wye Oak flew under my radar. They're practically a local band for me, but I just now finally tuned into them. Digging what I heard, really interested to see what the new album has to offer. You can tell, though, that the group has elevated past the dreaded "local band" status, as their current tour features no Baltimore date (DC is the closest they get).

Lowtide is the key discovery of this show. As mentioned in the show, I caught them on an episode of Henry Rollins's radio show Fanatic on KCRW, where he played the entire album. It is brilliant all the way through, and definitely an album that will be on heavy rotation here.

And I've only been able to dig into a couple of tracks on the new TBTCI compilation, but so far it's looking like another quality comp. I don't know how he does it, but Renato Malizia is truly one of the standouts in keeping this music going.

Dreaming in Stereo epsiode 25

True confession time: I haven't watched Twin Peaks. I know, I, too, feel that this is a personal failing of mine, something my better half is keen to point out. But, to be fair, I was 13 or so when it came out, and while I did enjoy a good mystery even at that age, I also think a lot of the truly Lynchian qualities of the show would have been lost on me at that point (although by that point in my life I was very much fond of the weird). I did see Fire Walk with Me while in high school though (with my parents, no less), and remember thinking, "He's really reaching with this one" (something my teenage self would most definitely say). But even then I was blown away by the soundtrack. Angelo Badalementi's compositions were just haunting, aided greatly by Julee Cruise's voice. I'd actually been toying with the idea of dropping some of that into the show, and here we finally are. If I had better foresight, I could have timed it to fit somewhere with the revival last year, but such is life. Anyway, here we're definitely putting the dream in dream pop.

And again, ignore what I say, the band is called Coma Pony. This is what happens when you have multiple notes all over the place.

Also, just to vent some steam, Mixcloud has been acting really wonky lately, making uploading far more difficult than it seems it should be. Here's hoping nothing goes away, but at least I feel better about filling up my computer's memory with all those backup files.

But enough kvetching. Enjoy!

Dreaming in Stereo episode 24

A "theme" show if you will - perhaps not as consistently noisy as I'd thought when putting it together (that middle sections ends up more like loud dreampop than anything), but I think there's enough feedback here to keep the people who enjoy that sort of thing happy.

That new A Place to Bury Strangers track is magnificent, and I can't wait for the full album to drop in a couple of months. I'll most likely also be revisiting Tape Deck Mountain when their new one hits in a few weeks. I still haven't made it all the way through the Magnánima Compilado Vol. 4 - it's 50 tracks, people! - but so far there are definitely a few keepers. One thing I'm really enjoying about doing the show in 2018 (not that I didn't in 2008) is seeing how this music is global now. There was an article in the Guardian a few months back focusing on Asian shoegaze which I think nicely puts a point on it. Needless to say, I think there's another theme show coming in the not-too-distant future.

That Medicine song was a fun find. There's a band with a definitely interesting evolution - I actually enjoyed their electronic album (which featured Brandon Lee's sister, of all people).

That Dirty Sidewalks song was a joyous find - an American band that sounds like Definitely Maybe-era Oasis with Going Blank Again-era Ride feedback? I'm in!

Enjoy!

Dreaming in Stereo episode 23

One of the joys of ever-evolving technology (and generous friends) is that at some point in your life you'll find yourself booting up an old machine of some sort and finding all sorts of old treasures you'd forgotten about (as well as the occasional file you'd wished stayed buried). Looking through an old homemade tower I'd been gifted several years ago (how many? We're talking Windows XP) I came across my old rip of Mew's 2005 album And the Glass-Handed Kites, and quickly fell back in love with it. Seriously, this was the album to beat back in '05/'06, with its soaring melodies, wall of sound, and just the sheer ambitiousness of it - not just the lack of gaps between songs, but the way they bled into each other - it was very much an album of its era, and yet it stood out so far from what else was on offer that year.

2009's No More Stories Are Told Today, I'm Sorry They Washed Away // No More Stories, The World Is Grey, I'm Tired, Let's Wash Away on the other hand, couldn't live up to the glory of its predecessor (at least to my ears at the time), and I found myself eventually moving on. I suppose I'll be revisiting that album soon as well, and checking out last year's Visuals (which is worth checking out just for the cover, if nothing else).

Also on the technology tip (to borrow from '90s hip hop slang), can we all admit what a godsend mp3 blogs were/are? Even though all the streaming services have basically killed the format (save for a few notable holdouts), it was a great way to find a song or two from some band you'd never heard of, or even knew a bit. Not that a Soundcloud or Bandcamp link isn't just as good - hell, you should be supporting the artists, anyway - but those blogs were nice, especially for out of print or super rare tracks. Case in point, the Mercury Rev and Mazzy Star songs in this episode. I honestly can't remember where that MR one came from, and even after doing some research I'm still not sure that Mazzy Star live collection is 100% above the board, even by the much looser standards overseas.

The set as a whole is a pretty broad range, and covers the spectrum of genres this show features, so if you listen to only one - but why limit yourself? Oh, and that Indelicates song - another group I'd long forgotten about and recently re-discovered. So bitter, so acerbic, so entertaining. "Thank you and goodnight," indeed.

Blushing - Hidden Places - Weak - ATHRecords

Dreaming in Stereo episode 22

As you can see, with the new year comes a new naming convention for the shows. I'm not sure it really matters, but I feel that having the episodes less tied to the date might make them more listenable in the future. And it makes hiding the erratic nature of the release schedule less obvious (did I just admit that?). I'm definitely looking forward/hoping for more consistency in the coming year.

I said before that I wouldn't indulge in a "best of" show for 2017, so this is as close as we'll get. Partly it's clearing out some tracks that have been patiently waiting to get played (I've been trying to work that Autumn Sighs song in for several episodes now) and partly featuring songs that made the end of last year far more enjoyable. With that new Ride EP already on the way, I'm looking forward to what the one-eight has to offer. And I was recently going through an old computer and found some gems I'd forgotten about, so I figured it would be good to share (especially that last one).

As you can hear, I'm still working out the mic configurations, but at least now you won't have to deal with the extreme volume disparities (hopefully). One of the joys of DIY is actually having to DIY, but we should have the kinks out sooner rather than later, I'd think.

This is all less music-oriented than I'd planned, so enough of me, let's get to the music:

Dreaming in Stereo for December 16, 2017

Will this be the last episode of 2017? I'd like to think not, but I make no promises. I do promise not to do a Best Of show, in any event. Not that it's a bad thing to do, but there was so much great music that came out this year, it would almost be a disservice to only focus on some of it.

Speaking of focus, this episode features a spotlight on releases from The Blog That Celebrates Itself's Bandcamp page. Their latest collection just came out a few days ago, and while listening to it I realized that their catalog in general deserved a segment of its own. Also, who doesn't enjoy a good cover version, especially one that crosses genres? (A shoegaze Ramones collection? Tell me more...)

And yes, that is a new Noel Gallagher song. Hey, I said this show covers Britpop. Listening to it makes me sad that his collaboration with Amorphous Androgynous will never be heard. Tosser!

Anyhow, enjoy!

Dreaming in Stereo for October 9, 2017

Yes, we're back! I had not intended for there to be such a long break between episodes (I've actually had this one planned for about three weeks now), but you know the drill: work, vacations, sickness, hurricanes, etc., etc.

Dreaming in Stereo for June 28, 2017

Sometimes, a set that doesn't fit one show becomes the axis of the next. I'd been wanting to play that Mark Lanegan for a while, ever since a friend let me hear what a monster that new album is, but I could never find the right place for it. I'd intended to have it in last week, but I think you'll agree that wouldn't fit in a show based on the new Ride. So, between the blank slate of a new show, and the Horrors' release of their new single, it all came together.

Speaking of that new single, the Horrors just keep getting better and better with each album. It's almost  a shame that they released Strange House, if only because we'll never get to hear that band again, and it was a tease of what they could have done if they'd continued in that direction (for those of us who like the noisy rock 'n' roll). But everything from Primary Colours on has been increasingly brilliant, their sophistication and mastery of atmosphere growing with each release. I can not wait for this new one.

It seems like I've found a few shoegaze bands from Brazil recently. I'll have to do some digging, I think there could be a set or even possibly a show's worth there.

And speaking of the show:
The Horrors - Machine - V - Wolftone
The Black Angels - Currency - Death Song - Partisan Records
Helen - Dying All the Time - The Original Faces - Kranky
Ruina - Burn - In Venus
-
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Jubilee Street - Push the Sky Away - Bad Seed Ltd.
Mark Lanegan Band - Nocturne - Gargoyle - Heavenly
The Organ - Memorize the City - Grab That Gun - Mint Records
-
Processions - Solopsist - Blush
No Joy - Hellhole - Creep EP - Grey Market
Taxes - City in My Head - Back of the Car Collection
Distant Creatures - Empire (acoustic) - A Friend's Halo single
-
Beach House - Space Song - Depression Cherry - Sub Pop

And here, something to kill some more time, Pitchfork's 50 Greatest Shoegaze Albums of All Time, and the inevitable response article featuring even more obscure bands.

Dreaming in Stereo for June 21, 2017

Better late then never, eh?

The new Ride album came out June 16th, and to say there have been mixed reviews would be an understatement. It's easy for fans to forget that the band put anything out after Going Blank Again (especially those fans too young to remember when Tarantula came out), and nostalgia has always had a way of warping our collective recollections of what bands sounded like (or were supposed to sound like). But taken on its own merits, Weather Diaries is actually quite a solid album, blending the varied elements of the band's original development along with some new ones that expand the sound dynamic even further (keyboards!). As a whole, the album is a nice return to form, and has some top notch singles as well (two of which you'll hear on this show).

Putting this set together was a little difficult, until I realized that I should eschew my instinct to mix it up and go with a shoegaze/dreampop exclusive set (or close enough), to really keep with the vibe of the featured band. It was a good excuse to dig out some tracks I'd been trying to find a spot for since I started, so I think it all worked out well.

Anyhow, let's be on with it, shall we?

Dreaming in Stereo for May 22, 2017 - The Manchester Episode

What a difference a few hours can make.

In honor of Morrissey's birthday on May 22, I thought I'd not just feature a tribute to Moz himself, but to the city that (more or less) made him, Manchester. As anyone who's seen the movie 24 Hour Party People, or has even a passing knowledge of pop music in the late 20th century knows, there's an almost staggering amount of talent that came out of that northern England town, particularly in the 1980s and '90s. So that Monday afternoon I posted the show, and due to technical issues (note: don't use Internet Explorer if you have any choice in the matter) I wasn't able to post this entry until later.

Like a lot of people, my heart sank that night when I heard the news. Here was this city I'd just honoured a few hours prior, making headlines for all the wrong reasons. I don't even want to mention it again, as I like this show to be a respite from the seemingly endless parade of tragedy and farce that seem to be the zeitgeist of the 20-teens, but suffice it to say this episode took on a different tone for me (and for the listeners?) in the days that followed.

Anyway, enough of being a really heavy negative vibe merchant. Enjoy the show, and Viva la Morrissey!

And at the risk of veering into sentimentality, here's Glastonbury Festival's Poet in Residence Tony Walsh reading his poem "This Is the Place":
